When I joined the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design team in Carlsbad, California, I was the only UI UX designer in the building. I set out to build and grow a team of UX and UI specialists with a focus on innovation and prototyping new ideas that found their way both into concept cars and future production models. As part of a global network of innovation hubs we were at the forefront of emerging technologies focussing on future interaction with A.I., GenAI, Augmented and Virtual Reality and Game Engines. We developed user journeys, UX concepts, Visual and Motion Design and built & tested interactive prototypes at the intersection between the physical car interior and the digital experience. Many projects required building physical mock-ups and interior models that served as testing ground for the digital and virtual experience prototypes. A holistic approach collaborating with engineers, exterior/interior designers and modellers was always encouraged among team members.
